Spring is that funny time in-between winter and summer. It’s warm(ish) outside, but the trees are bare. Shooting an engagement session outside is unlikely so a great indoor location like a studio, Airbnb or cute cafe are the next best thing. When we first started planning their engagement session in Toronto I sent Nicole and Jay a few suggestions. They chose “The Loft” at Mint Room Studios one of the latest rooms to be added to this popular studio. To a photographer an all white room is a dream. The floor to ceiling white walls act as a soft box and bounce the most beautiful light throughout the room. It gave this whole session a clean glow. I loved photographing this Toronto engagement session. I’m so excited to share it here with you.

Nicole and Jay a downtown Toronto love story

Nicole and Jay are a couple of cool kids. When I think about how they met the words chance encounter come to mind. Picture a late night on King Street West. Jay was walking out of a club and Nicole was leaving a bachelorette party nearby. They caught eyes on the street and started talking. They both lived downtown and likely passed each other a million times on the street, but this one chance encounter got them to meet. Six months later they just knew this was it for them. They talked about future plans and imagined what their wedding would be like. That’s where I step in.

Engagement photos at Mint Room Studios

Like many people Nicole told me she was a little nervous about their engagement session. As a Toronto wedding photographer, I hear this often and honestly I can relate to this feeling 100%. I get nervous in front of the camera too! Being in front of a camera can feel nerve racking so I encourage people to connect with each other and forget about the camera. I love encouraging couples to play and think of their engagement session as a fun date night. At the start of their engagement session Jay grabbed Nicole by the hand and spun her around the room. She immediately started laughing and I could see the nerves melt away.

Hands up if you spend most of your time with your special someone on the couch. Now imagine what you’re doing together on the couch. Are you watching Netflix, talking about your day or eating dinner? That cozy hanging out together at home vibe is the feeling I got Nicole and Jay to replicate at Mint Room Studios. I got them to cozy up and imagine a Sunday at home on the couch. They talked about meal prep for the week, fun events they had coming up all while playing with each other. It wasn’t something I told them to do. It happened naturally on it’s own. I loved watching these two interact. When I look at these photos I hear Nicole’s cheery laugh, I see Jay dancing with his lady. I can’t wait to photograph their wedding this summer at Hockley Valley.
